The Members of Tynwald (Manx parliament) meet at Tynwald Hill, St John's for the ceremony, a legal requirement established by the Island's ninth century rulers. Tynwald Hill is a four tiered hill in St John's village and is reputed to be constructed from sods of earth from every parish on the island. As well as the formal proceedings, a traditional fair is held with stalls, folk dancing, music and a fireworks finale.
